spruce tip maple tea, and nibble homemade bannock. Experience unique Aboriginal games like leg wrestling, pole push and wood sawing. Listen to traditional songs and join in the drumming. You step into another world with this year-round, family run business at Teepee Village in the small First Nation’s community of Ndilǫ (population 200), near Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. Summer cultural trips take place on the shores of Great Slave Lake, the 10th biggest lake in the world. While in winter, you get to experience a teepee perched atop the frozen lake, stomp through snow on wooden snowshoes with leather lashings and drive on an ice road. “What I enjoy most is seeing satisfaction in our guests. We teach them something about our culture and they leave happy. The more we teach them, the happier they are,” says AuroraTours.Net co-owner Rainer Erasmus. “And when they leave happy, we’re happy.” The company’s fall and winter’s star attraction is the spectacular aurora borealis, eerily shifting and shimmering across Northern skies. Small, intimate groups head out on late-night aurora hunting expeditions, stopping at secluded viewing spots away from town lights. “Even when the weather is really cold, we make sure everyone is having fun,” says Erasmus, who has Dene and Danish ancestry. “And we’re always sure to get our guests back to their hotel by 2 a.m. They just love it. No one has ever left disappointed.”

a hands-on, authentic immersion into the music, food and folklore of the world’s biggest Mi’kmaq community of Eskasoni,” says Sandra Macdonald, the band-run company’s Tourism Manager. “The Eskasoni community of 4,500 people is very enthusiastic about sharing views of Mi’kmaq life.” Set along a 2.3-km trail around Goat Island on Cape Breton’s tranquil Bras d’Or Lakes are a series of “stations” manned by passionate band members. Learn to make your own “four cent” cake – the popular snack created from leftover dough fried in lard – over an open fire. Learn insights among traditional hunting and fishing practices. Get up and try the koujua dance alongside a lady in a “jingle dress” whose rows of small metal cones make a tinkling sound as she moves. Practice your drumming. Listen to music. Play the ancient game of waltes and discover the practice of heating a tipi with glowing-hot rocks from a fire. At a reconstructed trading post, hear the stories of how Europeans once exchanged medicine and tobacco for pelts and hides. “The immersion is delivered with much love and dedication to Mi’kmaq culture,” says Macdonald. “We encourage visitors to take their time and ask lots of questions.” The roughly 3-hour experience finishes with tea and warm Mi’kmaq luskinigan, a warm bannock bread baked in an oven, delicious with jam or molasses. Then, it’s off to the gift shop for a handmade memory of your day to take home.

corn and black beans to garden fresh salads and sweet treats —try the Saskatoon berry bannock! — there’s something delicious for everyone. What’s in a name? Kekuli means “Pithouse” a warm winter dwelling built into the ground to protect people from the elements, that the Thompson First Nation lived in hundreds of years ago. In the Thompson language, they’re called sʔístkn; and you can still find historical Kekulis throughout the Thompson and Okanagan area today. That traditional warm welcome is something that co-owners Sharon Bond and Darren Hogg bring to the Kekuli Café, “Acknowledgment is so important in our culture,” says Sharon. “I wanted a place where everyone would feel welcome and acknowledged.” You feel that unique traditional cultural welcome as soon as you step inside: pow wow music softly plays, and Indigenous art hangs on the walls. And the bannock? It’s Sharon’s niche in the restaurant business, creating food from the homestyle ingredients that she grew up on, focussed around bannock, a ‘survival bread’ that was a staple food in the diets of Metis, First Nations, and Inuit communities. “I love how each culture has their own version of fried bread,” says Sharon. “There are so many similarities, like people, food will bring us together.”

visitors from all over the world who want to discover more about Huron-Wendat Culture through an immersive gastronomic experience. Our restaurant blends together history, crafts, art and gastronomy; Sagamité is a place which promotes reconciliation through meeting and sharing food and conversation over the table. We are centrally based in Old Wendake, just a few steps away from the enchanting Kabir Kouba waterfall and the many boutiques by the St Charles River. We called the restaurant Sagamité after the delicious home-grown ‘Three Sisters’ squash, corn and red bean soup enriched with game that’s at the heart of Wendat culinary culture. Our house speciality the Yatista (fire), also known as the Gallows shares the importance of fire to the Wendat People; our Ancestors used to communicate with the Creator through fire, talking, sharing and enjoying meals around its warming flames. This unique blend of Culture, history, food and tradition, surrounded by authentic unique Indigenous arts and crafts is why dining at Sagamité is a unique experience. Enjoy your meal!

spirit — in the culture of the people who have called this place home for thousands of years. James Allen has long been hosting culture and healing camps for Indigenous youth and adults at Shakat Tun, which means “summer trail” in the language of the Southern Tutchone. In recent years, he’s extended his family’s warm welcome to his camp, located next to Kluane National Park and Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site three hours’ drive north of Whitehorse, Yukon. Today, Shakat Tun Adventures offers its visitors a once-in-a-lifetime, hands-on experience in the ways of an indomitable people. Try your hand at beading, trapping, and drum-making. Taste traditional foods gathered on the land that has sustained its people for generations, such as dried meat or fish. Learn about the deep reverence they have for the area’s lynx, moose and caribou. “What I want to do is tell people our story on the land,” says Allen, a former chief of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations. “Our guests often have a spiritual awakening when they are in the bush. The culture and the land awaken your inner spirit.”

Tea Horse was founded by Denise Atkinson and Marc H. Bohémier and is a Certified Aboriginal Business with the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business. Our focus is on health and wellness and the restorative properties contained in tea, herbal infusions and wild craft foods like wild rice, North America’s original “superfood”. Since our inception, we ...
have been engaging with Indigenous Elders and harvesters of traditional plants for guidance on how to proceed with creating non-timber forest resource initiatives that will support and empower Indigenous Peoples and communities. At present, we source our tea and herbal infusions from Canadian tea experts who travel to the tea growing regions of the world and buy directly from the farmer or small producer. In October 2019, we attended the World Indigenous Business Forum in Vancouver, BC, where we formed partnerships that will allow us to transition to direct-sourcing from Indigenous Tea Peoples in Taiwan, Japan, Nepal, Australia and New Zealand. Our authentic, traditionally harvested wild rice is direct sourced from Indigenous harvesters from the pristine lakes of Northwestern Ontario and processed using minimal technology to ensure quality, nutrition, and flavour. Purchasing non-cultivated, natural wild rice supports Indigenous harvesters, preserves Indigenous food sovereignty and the eco-system in which it grows.
